Instructions to make Therali Appam/ Steamed Banana-Rice Dumblings:
- Steam the plantains. Remove the skin of the plantains and mash them into a fine paste. Keep it aside.
- Melt and strain the jaggery.
- Heat a nonstick pan. Melt ghee
- Add the plantain paste, shredded coconut, cardamom, ginger powder, cumin seeds, salt, and jaggery syrup. Mix well and cook until the mixture becomes thick and is well combined. Simmer the flame.
- Add the rice flour to the banana mixture little by little and mix well until it forms into a smooth dough. Remove from flame and allow it to cool.
- Make a cone out of the bay leaves and fill it it with the prepared dough using a spoon or your hands. Push the dough to lower end of the cone using the back side of the spoon. Cover the top of the cone with the leaf that is sticking out from the cone.
- Boil water in a steamer and steam the cone parcels for 20-30 mins until the parcels are cooked.
- If a toothpick inserted comes out clean, then it means the parcels are cooked.
- Remove from flame and allow it to cool. Serve with tea as a snack.
