- Make ready 1 &1/2 cup kodo millet
- Make ready 1/2 cup urad dal
- Take 1/2 cup poha
- Prepare 1 tsp methi seeds
- Prepare to taste Salt
It is called as Kodra in Hindi and Harka in kannada and Koovaragu in Malayalam. I have just replaced Varagu arisi with normal idli rice. My millet idlis are as tasty, soft and porus as rice idlis. I have served the idlis with Chettinaad Kaara Chutney.
Instructions to make Kodo millet idlis !!:
- Firstly take the measures quantity of kodo millet, dal and methi seeds in a big bowl and wash it well.Then soak it for 5 to 6 hours
- Just half an hour before grinding soak the poha.
- Then put all of these in the mixer and grind to make a batter.
- Add salt and mix well and keep it overnight for fermentation.It will look like this after it gets fermented.
- Then grease the idli plates with little oil and pour batter in the plates
- Then steam it for 10 minutes in a pressure cooker.
- Turn off the gas when done.Remove carefully once it cools down
- Serve with chutney of your choice.

Barnyard millet/Kodo millet in english is varai in konkani is a healthy millet and diabetic friendly too. Kodo millet used here is an excellent source of fibre.
