- Get 200 gm Split black urad
- Prepare 3 parts of water atleast (Dhal:water ratio)
- Make ready 1 medium onion finely chopped
- Get 3-4 fat cloves garlic grated
- Make ready half inch ginger grated
- Get 3/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
- Make ready 3/4 teaspoon hing/Asafoetida

- Take 1 teaspoon coriander powder
- Prepare 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
- Take 3/4 th cup of whole milk
- Make ready Salt(as required)
- Get Ghee or Oil to temper
- Take 1 teaspoon Cumin seeds
- Make ready 1 green chilli finely chopped
- Make ready 1 pinch sugar
- Take A few coriander leaves and onion slices to garnish
For the Spicy Urad Dal or Black Lentil Dal recipe I am sharing with you today I, obviously, used urad dal. This is a lentil with a mildly bitter flavor and a slightly slippery texture that tends to cook up thick and that makes it great as a binding Hi there Liv, My urad dhal is white and have an electric cooker. Kaali daal is a popular North India side dish of black lentils mixed with spices, tomatoes and cream that goes great with butter chicken and naan. In this version of Maa ki dal, we use only Whole urad lentils, and no kidney beans.
Instructions to make Kaali Dhal/black Urad dal:
- Pressure cook the dhal along with grated garlic, grated ginger, finely chopped onions, a pinch of hing, kashmiri chilli powder & turmeric powder for 20-25 minutes till soft. If you do not have a pressure cooker, I would suggest soaking the split lentils for about 30 mins atleast and cooking them directly on a pot on medium flame. If you are using the whole black lentil, then please soak for 6-8 hours.
- Once the dhal has cooked to a nice soft texture, allow it to slow cook further in low flame. In another pan, do a tempering with ghee or oil. To hot oil or ghee, add cumin seeds, green chilli and add this to the simmering pot of dhal. Add required salt, sugar and garam masala at this stage.
- Give it all a good mix and allow it cook for a another 5 minutes and then add whole milk. Mix well and cook for 3 more minutes till you start to see a nice creamy consistency.
- Turn off flame and garnish with fresh coriander leaves. Serve with sliced onions.
This uses less amount of butter/ ghee, and takes lesser time than the makhani dal. Soaked overnight, and Cooked in pressure cooker on slow heat, this dal will. Black Dal or Kaali Dal is the tasty combination of urad dal and rajma. It is a popular North Indian dish, flavored with butter and ghee.
