Generally, Bottle gourd which is called Surakai in Tamil is used to prepare Kootu, poriyal and kuzhambu. Calabash (Lagenaria siceraria), also known as bottle gourd, white-flowered gourd, long melon, New Guinea bean and Tasmania bean is a vine grown for its fruit. Sorakkai kootu / Bottle gourd kootu for rice is an easy to make, yummy South Indian style kootu recipe with coconut, moong dal. We call it as sorakkai poricha kuzhambu too.
Steps to make Bottle Gourd Rice:
- Heat a pressure cooker with oil and ghee and temper with whole spices.
- Add onion and red chilly. sauté until it becomes very soft.
- Add ginger garlic paste and sauté until raw smell goes.
- Add coriander leaves and mint leaves. Sauté for few mins. Add tomato and sauté until it becomes soft. Add red chilly powder and salt.
- Add bottle gourd and sauté for few mins. Add water and mix it well. Add rice and finally add few lemon drops. Close the lid and pressure cook for 2 whistles.
- Serve with any raita.
