  1. Get 3/4 cup chana dal
  2. Prepare 3 cups water
  3. Get 1 small tomato finely chopped
  4. Take to taste salt
  5. Make ready 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  6. Make ready 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
  7. Prepare 4 tbsp chopped coriander leaves
  8. Make ready 1.5-2 teaspoon Goda masala
  9. Prepare 1/4 teaspoon Hing
  10. Make ready 1 sprig curry leaves
  11. Take 1/4 teaspoon turmeric
  12. Take 2 tbsp oil
  13. Get 1 teaspoon red chilli powder - adjust
  14. Prepare 1-2 teaspoon desiccated coconut or grated coconut - optional

Steps to make Katachi Amti:
  1. Add chana dal with water in pressure cooker. It's best to soak dal 1 hour earlier to reduce the time of cooking
  2. Pressure cook Chana Dal for 6-7 whistles or until done
  3. Strain the liquid of chana dal
  4. It's the Stock which we will be using to make the amti. You can use chana dal to make Puran poli or any other filling
  5. We need 2 tbsp of cooked chana dal for amti, add it in a bowl and keep it aside
  6. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. Allow the seeds to splutter
  7. Add cumin seeds and allow it to splutter
  8. Add hing, turmeric, red chilli powder and curry leaves. Mix well for few seconds without burning spices
  9. Add tomatoes and cook until it softens completely
  10. Now add 2 tbsp reserved chana dal with Goda masala. Do not skip this masala as this is what brings in flavour for the curry. You can substitute it with half quantity of garam masala incase you don't have it but Garam masala will change the flavour of Amti. Goda masala is essential for the curry
  11. Mix well for few seconds. Now add Chana Dal stock to pan and mix well. You can add additional 1/2 cup water if required, I have skipped it
  12. Add salt and 2 tbsp chopped coriander leaves. Mix well
  13. Bring curry to boil
  14. Add dessicated coconut to curry and mix well
  15. Simmer and cook for 6-7 minutes. Switch off. Cover and rest for 20 minutes to allow flavours to set in
  16. Garnish with coriander leaves.Serve hot with rice or poli
