Dal Chakolya is a Maharashtrian comfort food. They are also known as Varanfal, Dalfal or Dal Dhokali in. Dal dhokli (Rajasthani: दाल ढोकली) (Gujarati: દાળ ઢોકળી), varan phal (Marathi: वरण फळ), or chakolya (Marathi: चकोल्या) is a Rajasthani, Gujarati and Maharashtrian dish made by boiling thick wheat flour noodles (dhokli or phal) in a pigeon pea stew (dal or varan). A hearty one pot meal from the Indian States of Gujarat and Maharashtra, where it is also called as Chakolya or Varan Phal.
Steps to make Varan phal / chakolya:
- Wash toor dal&add water some turmeric powder&hing and pressure cook until tender
- Till the time dal cooking, make dough for chakolya for dough sift flour &add salt to taste
- Now start adding little water at a time and keep kneading dough should be little beat stiff
- Apply few drops of oil on top & let it rest for 15 min
- Make a medium sized balls out of it & roll them like a thin big roti
- Cut into circle shape or square shape
- After that heat up oil in big veesel &use ghee or oil as ur choice
- Once ghee/oil is hot.. add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, curry leaves, hing, red chilli powder / green chilli, garlic paste, some tamarind, some jaggery…
- After that.. gets cooked and turns light brown
- Now put cooked dal & mix very well
- Consistency of dal should be thin as we are going to add chakolya in it. Dal will thicken up. So add water & adjust the consistency
- When dal comes to boil add green coriander leaves.
- Start adding dough piece in it.
- Let them cook completely a dal it may take around 10-20 minutes check the sea doing & add to salt
- Cover it simner on low heat for 5-10min chakolya is ready
- Last but imp add ghee
- And serve it with curd or pickle
